There are very few places on earth where the stigma of disability is so destructive, or the chance of becoming disabled so likely, as in
Africa. Third world countries, like Kenya, have
very limited or no welfare programs, which
makes it extremely difficult for poor families to
meet their basic needs. For poor families with
children who have a disability, it is near
impossible.
Currently, Disability Partnership Abroad operates
in Kenya, Africa (with a coordination office in
Melbourne, Australia). We have capable Boards of
Management in both Australia and Kenya. Our
focus, for the children we support, is to facilitate
access to specialist disability support, education,
rehabilitation and training and health services.
We also provide support for parents and family,
of the children, and the local community.
One hundred percent of the sponsorship money
we receive goes to Kenya. We ensure that 85
percent of that money goes directly to supporting
the children, with the remaining 15 percent going
to our office in Kenya, which coordinates and
distributes the funds. We are able to keep
administrative costs down because of our small
size and organisation set-up.
